Pharmaceutical plant «Dnepropharm»

One of the most «mysterious and mystical» abandoned city of Dnipro, is located directly in the city center, at 12 Yavornitsky Avenue, just next door to the hospital named after Mechnikov. Mechnikov Hospital. Why mysterious and mystical? – It’s simple. Before visiting this place, I had already heard stories in the style of «bringing the dead employee during the fire», as well as «we once climbed, so Antokhe was unlucky, he was shot from a traumatic pistol in the leg by a guard», in general, my impression has already formed a little. And of course to all this interest was added, and the very atmosphere of the abandoned place – Pharmaceutical factory!

There was no sense in counting on much to see, as the factory had been ransacked, and the buildings themselves were already in a very bad condition, we can safely say – in a catastrophic one.

A brief history of Dnepropharm

The history of «Dnepropharm», an enterprise of the pharmaceutical industry, begins in 1912, in the role of a sanitary and bacteriological institute, which produced various kinds of serums and vaccines. During the First World War, it produced cholera vaccines, anti-rabies vaccines, smallpox and Bute tuberculosis vaccines, as well as dysentery and phage typhus vaccines. After the end of the war, the Institute was headed by the outstanding epidemiologists Gromashevsky Lev Vasilevich and microbiologist, doctor-epidemiologist Padlevsky Lev Vladimirovich.

During World War II, the equipment and staff were evacuated to Stavropol, and after the liberation of Dnepropetrovsk in November 1943, resumed its work. In 1965, the scientific part of the Institute was liquidated, and the Dnepropetrovsk plant of bacteriological preparations was established on the basis of production facilities.

In the 1960s, the pharmaceutical industry expanded greatly with the introduction of new medical drugs such as urea for injection, mannitol, and cocarboxylase. These drugs became important agents in medical practice. Urea is used for a variety of therapeutic purposes, including osmotic diuretics, mannitol is used as an osmotic diuretic and a means of reducing intracranial pressure, and cocarboxylase is used to improve metabolic processes in the body.

In addition, this period witnessed an increase in the production of blood products such as gammaglobulin, immunoglobulin, protein and albumin. These drugs play an important role in immune defense of the body and treatment of various diseases. The field of diagnostics was also actively developing, with the production of agglutinating sera and diagnostics, which are used to detect various infectious diseases.

These advances have contributed to significant advances in medical practice and improved public health.

Until the 2000s, the company remained the only manufacturer in Ukraine of a number of highly effective drugs used to treat cardiovascular, intestinal infectious and immune diseases. These included such drugs as cocarboxylase hydrochloride, mannitol, biosporin and thymogen. The company also developed documentation and produced the drugs cerebral for the treatment of paralysis, subalin for the treatment of infectious gastrointestinal diseases and sucream for the treatment of premature infants.

The company’s specialization included the production and wholesale distribution of finished medicines in the form of injectable solutions and lyophilized forms in ampoules and bottles. These products were important for medical practice, providing treatment for various diseases and contributing to the health of the population.

Having plunged into the thicket of ivy and bushes that securely covered the fence of Dnepropharm, I first entered its territory. The first building we came across was an old building of the enterprise, obviously, it was the building where the fire I had heard about had taken place. There was no way to get into it from the front side, so we had to go around. And of course we got into the vivarium.

The vivarium was a place where animals were experimented on, and the atmosphere was ominous. I can’t say specifically what and how it was going on there, but the presence of cages did its job. Except for a lot of disinfectants in jars, the list of which is on the photo, and a couple of boxes with different chemicals, there is nothing else interesting.

Moving further into the area, our main target was closer, the «Underground Preparations Storage Facility». Let’s say that this is the highlight of this place, as it is the best preserved, along with the stocks of finished products. The depth of the vault is not great, to get to the drugs had to pass 3 not large flights of stairs. Here we start to meet the following nomenclature: «Piracetam», «Microbiological analysis», «Mannitol», «Novocain», «Sodium chloride», «Aminocaproic acid», «Water for injections», «Cocarboxylase hydrochloride», «Thiamine chloride», etc. In general very interesting, but nothing is clear!

For a long time to be in such a place and to study the whole assortment was not much wanted, I think because of understandable reasons, so it was decided to move on, so to speak in the direction of «garages».

We came across a dismantled UAZ truck, simply called “Bobik” and also a bunch of former refrigerators, in general there is no sense to emphasize this location at all.

Apparently, earlier it was one of the places of entry to the pharmaceutical plant. There were boxes around the circle of the territory, and in the center there were production facilities. If the boxes could still be distinguished, the rest of the buildings were not, they partially remained only the facade walls, and the interior has already been collapsed.

It is worth noting the huge amount of scattered products, ampoules, pills, bottles.

Only a couple of buildings in the center of the whole area had preserved corridors, and that only partially, most of the floors were on the first floor. It was impossible to get to some parts of the facilities because of the many thorny bushes mixed with construction debris.

In the distance, closer to the gate on the side of Yavornitsky Avenue, a guard’s booth was visible, a light was on, but he and we did not care. It is not clear what he was guarding there and from whom, the question is more to why the medicines were not properly utilized.

And the rest you can see about the joint outing of me and Dnipro Stalker.
